Plastic pollution has become one of the planet’s most pressing environmental issues, as rapidly increasing production of disposable plastic products overwhelms the world’s ability to deal with them.
OZTI East Africa launched a pilot project called Recycle@OZTI in 2018 to find a sustainable way of recycling hard plastics in Zanzibar.
The initial results have been very promising, and there has been great interest in the products that we are producing. Our focus is on job creation for local women, up-skilling of our staff, educational workshops for local school children and community members, community empowerment and finally, playing our part in saving our beautiful island from plastic pollution.
The current production range is flower and plant pots, lamps and light fittings, wall clocks, storage baskets, wall and counter tiles, counter tops (plastic terrazzo) and souvenir items for the tourism industry such as magnets and keyrings.
It is our firm belief that:
•Recycling alone is not the answer to our waste problem, refusing single use is. This message needs to be spread far and wide. We are able to do this through our education program.
•Each of us need to take RESPONSIBILITY for our waste.
•We need to RETHINK our use of single use plastics, RETHINK our behavior towards the earth, RETHINK our choices and consumption. REUSE whenever possible.
•We need to REspect the ocean and its marine life, is it our life support system.
•#dowhatyoucan if each one of us make small changes, together we will make a difference, just do what you can!
