The ultimate objective is to be able to reduce the amount of both macro- and micro-plastic in the ocean by reducing plastic waste on Zanzibar, making Zanzibar greener and heading towards a circular economy. These objectives shall be met through planned specific objectives which are:

1). Empowerment program and greater community involvement

We reach out to NGO’s and organizations who work with women groups across the island. Those interested attend a training session at our workshop to participate in the informal waste collectors program. They are given the tools to clean and cut the plastic (buckets, small knives and sheers). This plastic is then bought by recycle@OZTI. There has been some success in the program of the initial 50 women and we now wish to expand by a further 100 women and 100 unemployed youths.

2). Environmental Education for 6’000 school children by 2025

We run regular Workshops on Plastic Pollution for school children as part of our program to raise awareness on the plight of our oceans and the reasons why it is important to protect it. The program is called “Save the Ocean (save ourselves)”.

3). Up-scale current product portfolio and production

Plastic waste is omnipresent on Zanzibar. In an effort to reduce this, we turn High Density Poly Ethylene (HDPE) and Polypropylene (PP) post consumer waste into new products. Please see attached Product and Price List for our current product range. This grant will enable us to up-scale our portfolio, making production more efficient, cost effective and allow us to increase employment

4). Produce “plastic lumber” to manufacture furniture, replacing imported wood

2-Year goal is to recycle 5 of the 7 different types of plastic into “Plastic Lumber”. We aim produce beams that will replace hardwood brought to Zanzibar from Tanzania avoiding deforestation.

5). Increase sales to increase employment

We wish to reach the tourist market through a retail outlet in the heart of Stone Town frequented by tourists. We also would like to sell our products online and ship abroad. This will enable us to increase our team significantly. We will focus on employing previously unskilled woman in our workshop additional training for our current team.

Our focus  creating job opportunities for local women, up-skilling our power team, educating local school children and community members. We also focus on community empowerment and playing our part in saving our beautiful island from plastic pollution.

Our project is not for profit, and we fund our education and empowerment programs through sales
